Beyond Off-the-Shelf
There's a moment in every design project when a client realizes that no mass-produced piece will quite work. The room has unusual proportions, the vision is highly specific, or they simply want something that no one else has. That's when custom furniture becomes not just a luxury, but a necessity.
At Joel's, custom work is at the heart of what we do. The majority of our pieces are made to order, crafted to the exact specifications of each client's space and style.
The Design Consultation
Every custom piece begins with a conversation. Our design team sits down with you — sometimes in our showroom, sometimes in your home — to understand not just what you want, but how you live.
We discuss dimensions, materials, finishes, and functionality. We look at your existing pieces and the architectural details of your space. We talk about color palettes and textures. By the end of this consultation, we have a clear picture of the piece you need.
"The best custom furniture doesn't just fit a room — it completes it. Every dimension, every material choice, every detail serves the whole." — Joel's Design Philosophy
From Concept to Blueprint
Once we've aligned on a direction, our team creates detailed specifications. This includes:
- Precise dimensions tailored to your space, down to the quarter inch
- Material selections — wood species, fabric swatches, hardware finishes
- Construction details — joinery methods, spring systems, cushion compositions
- Finish samples — stain colors, lacquer sheens, patina treatments
You'll see and approve everything before production begins. There are no surprises with custom work — only anticipation.
The Craft of Making
This is where patience and skill converge. Depending on the complexity of the piece, production typically takes six to twelve weeks. During this time, skilled artisans bring the design to life.
Woodworking involves selecting the best boards, matching grain patterns, and executing precise joinery. A fine dining table might require days of hand-sanding alone to achieve a surface that's glass-smooth to the touch.
Upholstery is equally demanding. A master upholsterer works layer by layer — frame padding, spring tying, foam shaping, fabric cutting, and final tailoring. The difference between good upholstery and exceptional upholstery is invisible to the eye but immediately apparent in the sit.
Finishing is the final act. Whether it's a hand-rubbed oil finish that reveals every nuance of the wood grain, or a multi-coat lacquer that creates a mirror-like surface, finishing requires a controlled environment and a patient hand.
Quality That You Can Feel
When a custom piece arrives in your home, the quality is immediately apparent. Drawers glide silently on dovetailed runners. Cushions hold their shape after years of use. Wood surfaces glow with depth and warmth that only comes from meticulous finishing.
This is furniture that doesn't just furnish a room — it elevates it.
